Dam Liners

Water storage and waste water are essential to various industrial operations which make proper design and installation of dams of the utmost importance.

There are two important factors to be considered in building a dam: seapage loss and evaporation.  These two factors have made lining systems superior to clay.

Benefits of lining systems include:

  • Ease and speed of installation
  • Better water quality
  • Less maintenance
  • Properly designed and installed dam has a life of over 100 years

Permathene offers a range of options for your water storage/distribution needs and can assist with sizing,  design, supply and construction of ponds, tanks, plants, lagoons and reservoirs.

Permathene can price complete packages or components including:

  • Dam and irrigation design.
  • Installation of membrane lining.
  • Design and installation of evaporation covers.
  • Supply of sludge dewatering bags.
  • Design, supply and install of erosion control measures for your projects.

The choice of material type depends on several factors including terrain, economics, chemical and mechanical resistances. The majority of lining materials are unreinforced Polypropylene (PP), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE). We also offer provide specialist linings for specific applications including urethanes and fuel resistant membranes, plus reinforced polypropylenes.

Lining Systems

The type and grade of liner selected is based upon several factors including cost, ease of handling, life expectation, mechanical resistance.

A lightweight (.5 mm or less) lining is generally used where on-site installation is not practical due to location or ground conditions. These lighter linings are economical, easily factory manufactured and can be installed by the owner. However, they are also more prone to damage. With proper care a service life of over 10 years can be achieved and even beyond 20 years. Liner failure is hardly ever caused by UV alone and is a combination of factors including heat, mechanical and chemical.

For installations which require maximum resistance to chemicals (especially hydrocarbons) and higher installations requiring higher tensile strengths we always prefer to use HDPE.  FPP has certain advantages for specific applications.
