This Reno Mattress is a low-profile gabion unit measuring 6 m x 2 m x 17 cm, manufactured from polymer-coated Galfan (zinc–aluminium) double-twisted wire mesh. Once filled with rock, it forms a flexible, permeable revetment that stabilises banks and dissipates hydraulic energy.
The polymer coating over Galfan provides enhanced corrosion resistance compared with standard galvanizing, extending service life in freshwater, tidal, and industrial environments. The flexible mesh conforms to irregular ground and tolerates differential settlement without cracking.
Compartmented cells help confine the stone and maintain uniform thickness, while lids are closed after filling and edges secured with lacing wire or ring fasteners. Adjacent units are connected to create a continuous mattress; a suitable geotextile underlay is typically used to prevent soil loss beneath.
Typical applications include river and canal linings, culvert inlets/outlets, spillways, bridge abutment scour protection, shoreline revetments, and embankment toes. Nominal plan area is 12 m² with an approximate volume of 2.04 m³; fill with appropriately graded rock to suit the design.
