Selecting the correct height and thickness depends on plant species, soil conditions, and proximity to structures. As a guide, barriers are commonly installed from 300 mm for shallow-rooted plants up to 1000 mm or more for bamboo and vigorous trees. Always locate and mark underground services before trenching. For installation, excavate a narrow trench slightly deeper than the chosen barrier. Place the barrier vertically with the smooth face toward the protected structure, ensure continuous runs, and seal any joins per manufacturer guidance. Leave a small upstand above finished grade to discourage surface rooting, then backfill and compact. Use linear layouts to protect paving, driveways, boundaries, and utilities; form rings or semicircles to contain individual trees or bamboo clumps. When encircling a plant, allow clearance for trunk flare and future growth, and overlap and seal ends to maintain continuity. Best practice includes avoiding gaps and sharp bends, compacting backfill to reduce pathways, and maintaining site drainage so water does not accumulate against structures. Periodically inspect exposed edges and irrigation patterns to keep roots directed downward.
